Our Philosophy
Throughout the 1970s and for most of 1980s, there was a widely held belief that developing countries can solve their economic and social problems if they adopted western type of solutions to their problems. Even the IMF and the World Bank held to that belief and dished out solutions to problems that ended up in the creation of costly white elephants, the dislocation of large sections of the underprivileged and disadvantaged and unattainable and unsustainable projects. The private sector was no different as they tried to adopt management styles and policies that neither reflected the realities on the ground nor to the creation of competitive advantage for such companies. Some twenty years on, we have learnt better and today it is becoming more fashionable to admit that solutions to problems, both at the public and private levels, must not only try to embody the best from the developed world but that such solutions must be propagated by the very people who have to live with their consequences.
PGTI has been conceived out of this realisation. The founders of PGTI are all from the developing world but their education and training are firmly imbedded in the West. This has placed the company in a unique position in so far as it is able to offer solutions to problems that attempt to incorporate the best of both worlds but without sacrificing the need to produce socially justifiable outcomes. The trainers also include people from the West but with one proviso: they are in support of the aims and aspirations of the developing world and have a flexible approach to the development of policies and in the implementation of strategies to problems.
At another level, PGTI’s approach is to learn as much as you can first about the problem at hand, be it a training programme or the delivery of a specific knowledge-based activity, through preliminary dialogue that may involve a visit, the completion of a questionnaire, or some other method(s) that the client may prefer as the best way to communicate their needs. That is then followed by an agreed set of outcomes, be it knowledge or skills based, that the client expects at the end of the training session(s) or consultancy period.
Mindful of the need to keep a strong ear on the ground in order to keep abreast of changing local conditions, PGTI is setting up satellite campuses, partnership with Universities in West Africa starting in Sierra Leone. Manila city The Philippines and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and China, The purpose of this Campuses is twofold: to offer affordable training sessions that will not drain scare foreign reserves and secondly, it will afford those who attend a local training session to pursue more advanced studies without having to leave their jobs. Also, the local campus can subject to negotiation by companies and parastatals be seen as repository learning resource and information centre that can be tapped into as and when needed.
